Speak UP! Be Heard! Strong!

Singer shwoing teeth tongue and lips in pronunciation

She is singing in a loud voice.

Listen to yourself.  Are you speaking super quiet?  Are you talking in the same tone and volume as you normally would?

Most of my students speak very soft and very quiet in English, even if they are VERY LOUD in their native tongue.

It can be very hard to talk loud when you are afraid of making a mistake.

The bigger problem is if you speak quietly in a soft voice: It is all a mistake and no one can hear you.

Take a Deep Breath Before You Speak

English is all about air.  It helps with intonation, making the sounds, and sounding natural.  Not all languages are the same.  This may be very difficult for you at first.  Keep trying until you can do it.

I can guarantee you 100% that your pronunciation will improve if you take a deep breath before speaking.  The air is used in each sentence and for many sounds.

After each period, most commas, and some other words you must take air in.  Take a breath at each period at first to make it easier.

Listen to yourself.   Each sentence should have the same high energy and begin fresh.  If you do not breathe in before each sentence your voice will get loswer, quieter, and pronunciation will be worse.

This is the easiest and free way to improve pronunciation that most will not tell you.  Record your voice saying your name or something easy.  Then take a deep breath and record it and you will hear the difference.

Exercise Your Voice: Read 20 MInutes a Day

To Become Good at English takes practice.

Not practicing silently to yourself.  Speaking Out Loud.

Exercise is good.  Consider reading out loud to yourself or in the mirror every day for 20 minutes.  This is far more practice than any class or going to school.  Your voice will become stronger.

Read out loud 20 minutes a day  This is like exercise where your voice muscles will become stronger and you become used to talking.  Many students just can't get started.

Sound Begins With the Air In Your Diaphragm

Imagine your diaphragm is a balloon where the air begins,

and the larynx in your throat as the place you blow air into the balloon.

When you let air out slowly out the balloon while pinching it and squeezing it.    The air  makes a sound.  Not pretty but a sound.

Every kid in every country has done this.

This is how sound is made.

Of course, we control the air, shape out lips, place out tongues in the right place, position out teeth and cheeks....all these make a prettier sound.  We are more advanced than a kid with a balloon.

A free trick to improve fast. Really Effective

One method my students like is to both have a copy of something to read.  As one person reads the other marks mistakes or problems with a highlighter.  Then they give that to the speaker.

The reader reads again using the paper showing the mistakes and unbelievably has very few mistakes.

Remember, do not mark the whole word, just the part of the word the friend doesn't pronounce very well.

Some of my students who have over 20 mistakes in a a few paragraphs the first time, only have 2-3 the second time when aware of their mispronunciations.

This is because they are aware of the mistake and are more careful, or they already know how to say the sound but have a bad habit, or bad habits.

Switch and the speaker becomes the examiner.  It is really interesting.

  1.  Take a Deep Breath and Begin to Talk  Often People Can't Hear You.  It isn't bad pronunciation, it is that you talk too quietly.

  5. Take a Pronunciation Test   It Is Great!  It only takes 10 minutes and it is the most complete test anywhere.  You will get a report of exactly what you need to improve, and videos and sound files to help you.  It includes a lot more so find out all about it and it is also includes some fun and a private Facebook Group.
  6. Practice the problem sounds  You need to know exactly how to make the sounds, how to place your teeth, tongue, lips and the air flow.

Your Current Skill and How Much To Improve

Every class, every student I ask how can I help you?

What do you need?

What are your problems?

Almost all answer negatively.  Saying I am not good, my pronunciation is very bad, I am not confident, I am afraid of  people laughing at me, I am afraid of people not understanding me.

The very best thing you can do is to find out your problems and get the best ways to fix them fast.  it is far less expensive and faster than any other way.

Know your problems so you can fix them.
